10 Years of Wind of Wind Power Generation in Austria

This week, we marked 10 years of wind power generation in Austria with our valued partners, suppliers, landowners, regulators, institutions, sector associations, financiers, and renewable energy peers.

Vienna: Celebrating a Legacy of Innovation in Wind

In 1883, Vienna hosted the world’s first electricity-generating wind turbine at the International Electrical Exhibition. Amid displays from 579 exhibitors worldwide, Austrian engineer Josef Friedländer showcased this groundbreaking generator near the iconic Rotunda building. With a rotor spanning 6.6 meters, the wind generator powered 25 electric lamps and even a threshing machine—a revolutionary agricultural tool of the time. This historic achievement marks Vienna’s early role in renewable energy, a city that still serves as a hub of innovation for ContourGlobal as we celebrate a decade of wind operations in Austria.

To mark this milestone, our CEO Antonio Cammisecra, Head of Europe and Africa Carlo Zorzoli, and Head of Austria Bernhard Haider welcomed over 60 stakeholders to a special event in our Vienna office. The participants included partners, suppliers, land owners, regulators and institutions, sector associations, financiers as well as peer companies developing renewables in Austria. They convened to hear remarks highlighting both ContourGlobal’s achievements over the past decade and our vision for future growth, with a strong focus on the role of wind technology in our new strategy.

ContourGlobal currently manages an installed capacity of 162 MW from seven wind farms across Austria. In recent years, we have increased yearly electricity generation by 66% (from 240 GWh/year to 400 GWh/year) through repowering projects at four of these sites, while reducing the number of turbines by nearly 20%. This not only maximizes energy output but also underscores our commitment to reducing environmental and visual impact.

Looking ahead, as we repower the remaining three wind farms, our installed capacity will increase to 230 MW, with a goal to more than double our annual energy production in Austria. But there’s more—ContourGlobal also plans to develop new and exciting projects that will support Austria in meeting its target of an additional 10 TWh of electricity from wind power by 2030, as outlined in the Austrian Renewable Energy Act (EAG).

We have invested over 110 million euro in Austria in the last decade, and are now building a pipeline of 1 GW in wind development projects, paving the way for additional new investments by 2030.

Austria is now also a center of excellence for our global wind operations, with our new Global Wind Academy training and empowering colleagues to drive the next phase of wind technology growth.

Thank you to all the colleagues who have contributed to this journey and are building what comes next!
